A flat tire… Spring in Bluffton.
Considering the past few days have been exceptionally hectic, I felt that I was on a roll by this mid-afternoon. A early morning chance encounter at the gas station with an area lawyer looking to buy real estate in Bluffton (cards exchanged), a morning staff meeting at the Cora Bett Thomas office with promising news, a stop by a client’s workplace with an additional favorable outcome and a visit to my daughter’s school in Okatie to drop off glue sticks for a St. Patrick’s Day project, all was going pleasantly smooth. Then I heard that seldom but unmistakable sound of a thumping flat tire. Why flat tires always occur on the busiest area roads in Bluffton and at the peak of traffic, I’ll never know. In an instance when I could truly appreciate mobile communications, I phoned my husband who was, luckily, only a couple of miles away.
My husband arrived within a few minutes, as he pulled up another vehicle pulled in just before him. I quickly explained my husband was in the other vehicle and thanked him for stopping. As the Good Samaritan was driving off, both my husband and I had noticed his Massachusetts plates. With each of us having previous and amiable work histories in the Boston area, we just looked at each other saying something to the effect that “it figures the one person who stopped was from Massachusetts.” The truth is he could have been a Bluffton local or from Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin or even another country. The Bluffton population is as diverse as they come.
After my husband finished changing the tire and we decided where I should go to have it replaced I drove off reverting back to my previous thoughts of real estate,
scheduling and appointments. I quickly realized that Winefest was two days away. Thirty dollars for an opportunity to taste over 250 different wines from all over the world, my mood began to improve. Then I realized that the St. Patrick’s Day parade was the following weekend on Hilton Head, my mood improved even further. I continued to realize that the following week would be Easter and then Verizon Heritage Week… Each of these events and holidays may offer a chance to meet someone new, maybe a new client, maybe a new friend. I can almost garauntee that I’ll meet someone from a different part of the country or the world.
Maybe this time of the year makes my glasses just a little rosier, and it’s odd how the inconvenience of having a flat tire can remind me of the fact that I truly appreciate where we chose to live, work and raise a family. No doubt, Bluffton, South Carolina really is “a state of mind.”
